Few days in the Philippines
I went to the Philippines for a few days and this is a few things I came across there.
Anne Curtis is on all adverts! Whoever she is, she is THE star!

Paris Hilton is launching some real estate property in The Philippines called Azure, she is on TV, billboards, magazine to sell that place. Lame…
God advertise on billboard. I wonder which media agency he uses…

Some brands get free advertising from Jeepne (the local bus transport). Hello Emirates!

So I’ve been testing the campaign, I’ve been clicking a lot
Chili House, a fast food chain from Jordan, just opened in Dubai Marina, with a naughty signage..
Time Out Dubai website adverts bonanza!
Is this like a display adverts sizes and formats course? Lol.
(oh sorry I had to cut the course short but there was more sizes if you scrolled down…)
The Internet Show, Dubai 2012.
For the love of branding and good taste, I was wondering who designed this logo or decided to go for it? And the rest of the event branding for that matter…
So old style (and in a bad way), so tacky, so painful for the eyes. What’s up with the fonts, I mean fontssssssssss? the reflection effect? the colours? Oh and beautiful internet awards board by the way, I’m sure some people did it on purpose to lose not to be taken in photo in front of that…
Ok I stop for now…
New Film-Advert by Mercedes-Benz France.
Diving into the logo of the brand: the star. Proper groove, amazing images, amazing symbolism. The advert could even make me start liking cars… Ufffff.
Nivea Creme, Germany, 1920.
This is a cinema advert for Nivea in 1920. Nivea was trying to attract the jewish and gypsy markets of Germany who were already (pre-WWII) said to have a darker skin than the rest of the population. The cream was made with Eucerit, it’s not very clear it is indeed a whitener but it is the main component of Nivea cream. The word ‘Nivea’ comes from a Latin word meaning ‘snow-white’.
I found this discovery quite interesting! We always criticize the cream “Fair and Lovely”, but it seems Nivea started like that too…
Actimel, typical example of marketing scam!
Yes, I dislike Actimel with a passion. Why? Because this is one of your typical marketing scam. Let me explain…
Actimel or DanActive in North America, was launched by Danone in the 90s. It is a probiotic yoghurt (or in French “Alicament” a contraction of the word “food” and “medicine”), which contains L.Casei bacterias and therefore is supposed to help you build up your natural defenses and digestion.
The entire advertising concept of this product is based on health benefits, which have never been proven (unless you’d be eating 20 of these a day). Several Actimel adverts stating “scientifically-proven” have actually been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.
The thing that really upset me is that Danone uses the general lack of nutrition knowledge to create a new need. Lack of nutrition knowledge because drinking Actimel has actually the same benefits as eating a normal yoghurt, which is much cheaper.
You know when you open a normal yoghurt, there is a bit of liquid on top. What do most people do? They drop this liquid in their plate before eating the yoghurt. Well, this liquid is the Actimel part. You drop it from yoghurts, but you pay for it to drink Actimel.
On top of that, Actimel contains a lot of sugar, from 3.3g to 12g per 100ml depending on the flavours. To compare, Coca-Cola contains 10g per 100ml. Actimel so healthy, hey?!
So best is to stick to plain cheap 0% yoghurt. And if you want to eat and be healthier, learn about nutrition but certainly don’t blindly listen to what they say in adverts.
That graffiti would make a great advert for Google! ;-)

Isn’t it the feeling you get sometimes, driving on Sheikh Zayed Road at night, billboards following you all the way. “All these lights and nothing to display”

KFC roundabout
The JBR roundabout in Dubai has become such an advertising entertainment. After Panadol, and some huge waterproof Nokia phone diving in an aquarium (was it Nokia?!), now is the turn of KFC.
Are these chicken pieces or giant nuts? Even though it reminds me about KFC, it’s not very appetizing..
